Drinking Water Contaminants
Edited by Damia Barceló
An increase on the number of papers in Science of the Total Environment related to drinking water contaminants was noticed in the last few years. This Virtual Special Issue (VSI) brings these papers together in one place. Papers were selected from 2014 up to now covering four areas : (a) Arsenic, fluoride and other multiple inorganic toxic substances at drinking water sources: groundwater and well water, (b) Micro-organic contaminants and trihalomethane precursors at drinking water sources, (c) Microbiological contaminants at drinking water sources , (d) Drinking water treatment technologies and (e) Risk at drinking water distribution systems
Overall this VSI covers a topic of high relevance that connects human health and well-being and access to drinking water. Public health and epidemiology started on the concept of water-borne diseases with the well-known case of London epidemics of 1849 and 1854 verifying that cholera was transmitted in the local water supply. This VSI provides examples on different types of chemical and microbiological contaminants at drinking water sources, treatment solutions and risk associated with treated waters and distribution systems.
