The research focuses on knowing how water quality affects the composition of microbial communities and, more importantly, how these activities affect the water quality in aquatic systems , so natural and artificial.

Specific objectives are:

•generate more information about the presence of antibiotics in aquatic environments

 • their ability to exert a selective pressure on bacterial populationss

 • heir ability to exert a selective pressure on bacterial populations, and to analyze the potential impact of the anthropogenic inputs on the prevalence of resistance genes and the emergence of new resistant strains

Carles Borrego
Research Professor (UdG Associated)
cborrego@icra.cat

Assistant Professor of Microbiology at the University of Girona and head of the Group of Molecular Microbial Ecology (gEMM, Grup de Recerca Consolidat de la Generalitat de Catalunya) in the Institute of Aquatic Ecology. He received his Ph.D. in Biology at the University of Girona in 1996 on the topic of Eco-physiology of Green Sulfur Bacteria and photoadaptation. His research is on the field of microbial ecology of lacustrine systems, specially stratified lakes where the generation of oxic-anoxic interfaces allows the development of complex communities and hot spots of microbial activity. The current research of his group is centered on the diversity and dynamics of uncultured archaea in these environments, with a special focus on the impact of their activity in the biogeochemical cycling of C and S in both the planktonic and the sediment compartment. He has a special interest to overcome the low cultivability of these fastidious prokaryotes to obtain isolates that allow a complete understanding of their metabolic, physiologic and genomic features.

Researcher at ICRA. He obtained his Ph.D. in Animal Pathology at the University of Zaragoza (2006) and completed his postdoctoral training at the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC). His research topic is focused on microbial diversity and function in aquatic environments. He has published more than 25 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on microbiology.
